Difference Between a Residential and Commercial Move

by Lester Herrera

When hiring a mover, it is essential to differentiate between a residential and commercial mover. Some people think that these services are the same. Although there are many similarities between residential and commercial moves, there are some notable differences.

Planning

When you are planning to move to a new home, timing is crucial if you are trying to cut moving costs. Otherwise, you can move any day and time. For a commercial move, you need to plan ahead. You should choose a day and time that has minimal impact on your day-to-day operations.

Additionally, you need to give your employees ample notice about the move. You will also need plenty of manpower and special equipment depending on the size and type of your business. Typical corporate moves involve using hand trucks and forklifts for moving heavy items.

Sensitive Items

Another key difference between residential and corporate moves is the sensitive items involved. For a residential move, some sensitive items include birth certificates, passports, tax documents, money, and computers. You can pack these items in a bag or box and carry them yourself.

On the other hand, businesses have more sensitive equipment and documents to consider. Financial records and employee documents should be stored in document rooms and filing cabinets. Digitized items are stored on hard drives and servers. This means you will have to move all these sensitive items safely. Corporate movers are familiar with data protection laws and will ensure your sensitive data is protected during the move.

Transporting Items

One small truck may be sufficient for a residential move to get all your possessions to your new home. A corporate move requires several moving trucks depending on the size of the business. For example, a business with offices, labs, warehouses, and medical facilities will require multiple trucks to move all the belongings. With a residential move, you may be able to carry some things in your car. However, for a commercial move, most items are too large to fit in a small vehicle.

Moving Team

Another notable difference between a residential and commercial move is the number of professional movers required. For a residential move, a few movers may be enough to get all your belongings in the truck.

For a commercial move, you will need a bunch of people to lift the heavy equipment. Some items may not fit in elevators and must be manually moved through the stairs. Make sure you choose the correct number of movers to make your move easier and faster.
